This course is a lightweight version of our renowned Software Engineer FastTrack course. It features the same industry-led curriculum (minus the Final Projects module) and bespoke learning materials, but there are no scheduled classes or lectures. Learners have access to our library of recorded lectures, a tailored learning schedule, access to support from our community of staff, students and alumni, and the ability to further personalise their experience with 121 appointments and code reviews available to purchase separately as needed.

Because you complete this course at your own pace, you can choose whether to study full-time or part-time. Most students partaking in full-time study (40 hrs/wk) can expect to complete this course in 12 weeks. Those studying part-time (20 hrs/wk) can expect to complete this course in approximately 24 weeks.

You have lifelong access to our learning platform and our community, so you can take as long as you need on this course.

The curriculum

Tooling and workflow

Gain an understanding of the tools needed to get started with software development and how to install them, so that you are ready to hit the ground running.

Command Line

Learn how to navigate files and folders programmatically using a tool called the Command Line - one of the best practises allowing you to work much more efficiently as a Software Engineer.

Git and GitHub

Keep track of changes in your code using Git. You can then share these changes on GitHub allowing you to store a backup of your code, but also opening up your code to other developers to collaborate on.

HTML, CSS and the DOM

Create basic websites in HTML, before giving layout and extra aesthetic to this content with CSS. You'll then learn how to manipulate page content using JavaScript, allowing you to create interactive experiences.

Frequently asked questions

When do the classes for this course take place?

This course doesn't have any scheduled classes. You can study at your own pace with recorded lectures and our bespoke learning materials.

For a more structured course with live lectures (and Q&A) and scheduled class time we recommend our Software Engineer FastTrack course.

How many hours a week do I need to study?

Overall this course should take you at least 440 hours to complete. Therefore, on a full-time basis you could realistically complete the course in 12 weeks and on a part-time basis you could complete the course in 24 weeks.

What are the entry requirements?

Before you are able to take this course, you will need to take our free Introduction to Programming course. This should take you around 25 hours to complete, and should give you a good idea if programming is for you.

Is this an online course?

Yes. This course is 100% online.

When can I apply?

You can sign up for this course from 1st June 2020. You will need to have first completed our free prerequisite course Introduction to Programming. If you would like to be notified when this course opens for applications, please register your interest.

What equipment do I need?

You will need a laptop running Ubuntu (or another Linux distribution), or a Mac running Mac OS X in order to participate on this course. Windows users may struggle and support from our teaching team will take longer.

As the course is fully online, you will also need a webcam and a microphone in order to participate. Most modern laptops have these built in, but if yours doesn't then there are external ones available to buy.

Is this course beginner friendly?

Yes. It does assume you've completed our free Introduction to Programming course, but aside from that you won't need any prior coding experience.

Will I have a portfolio to demonstrate to employers?

Yes. At the end of the course you will have at least 10 projects on your own personal GitHub account that employers can look at. This is the standard approach for Software Engineer portfolios.

What can I do after the course?

Many of our students go on into careers in software development with roles including:

  • Backend Developer

  • Frontend Developer

  • Full-stack Developer

Others use the knowledge gained in the course to add technical capability to their businesses, to start new a new business, or to progress further with their current employers.

Do I need to quit my job to study on this course?

No. This course is designed to fit around your other commitments, and you can take it at your own pace.

Our Software Engineer FastTrack course has scheduled lectures where you can participate and ask questions. These are recorded so you can watch them again them afterwards.

Students on our Software Engineer FlexiTrack course still have access to pre-recorded lectures, which include questions from students in previous cohorts.

Access to support lobby

Our Software Engineer FastTrack course have access to our Support Lobby - a 6 hour online support drop-in that takes place every Saturday 10:00 - 16:00 (BST).

Group project

Students on our Software Engineer FastTrack course have a Group Project module at the end of their studies where they put their skills to the test in a team made up from other students in their cohort, who - with assistance from our expert tutors where needed - work together on an original website or application.

Students on our Software Engineer FlexiTrack programme don't have a formal group project, but are more than welcome to do one independently or find other people within our community to work on a project with if they wish.

Graduation ceremony

We hold an online graduation ceremony for students on our Software Engineer FastTrack course after they have completed their studies, where they showcase their final project along with the rest of their team. This is open to the public, so family and friends are able to attend if they wish.
