Dan

Tell us a little bit about you/your background e.g. previous coding experience, job situation before the course, motivations for taking on a coding course etc

My previous career was in education as a Deputy Headmaster. I found myself feeling unchallenged and lacking the motivation to want to continue to progress in that career field. I always felt that when you're bored with your job it's time to do something else instead of complaining about it.

How long did it take you to get a job offer?

One week

What's your experience been like in the new role so far?

Brutal but an awesome challenge. Nothing makes you feel more alive than standing at the bottom of a mountain looking up. It's challenging but really rewarding to be able to develop towards a platform millions of people use daily.

What do you plan to do next with your new skills? - projects, tutoring/mentoring, new job/promotion, etc.

Everything! I plan on working my way into a senior role and teaching at the same time. Most likely start my own business once I feel I have enough industry knowledge.

Why did you choose Command Shift over other courses?

Honestly, financial reasons. Not only was the course cheaper than others, it also allowed me to work at the same time as it's an evening course. Having £10,000 available to take a course and have three months off work just isn't a viable option, neither is accruing more debt in regards to a loan if you can help it.

What did you enjoy about Command Shift?

The staff were really helpful, knowledgable and friendly. I also liked the tech stack we covered.

What did you find challenging at Command Shift?

Making certain sacrifices for 6 months. Half a year is a long time to commit to training and life happens in that amount of time which mean you can't always commit as much as you would like to some weeks.

How did you maintain a balance between work/study/life?

I quit my job after 3 months of the course as I felt I was distracted by my job and comfortable with my income.

If someone was on the fence about doing the course, what would you tell them?

A new career is literally 6 months away if you start today. You will be hard pushed to find a course that returns what this one does in the amount of time it takes to complete. You'll regret not taking this opportunity in the future.

What advice would you give to others who are doing the course now?

Apply yourself, work hard, commit as many hours as you can, ask lots of questions and talk to each other. No one person has all the answers but as a collective we do, so leave your ego at the door and don't be afraid to make mistakes, it's the only way you learn!
