Creating your first CV as a Junior Developer
AH! Why does writing a CV seem like the biggest chore?
We’ve created a step by step guide of what you need to include in your CV and how to structure it.
There's typically two types of Developer CV. You’ll see a traditional CV and then a more creative one. The preference is down to you but the content is the same and let’s try and keep it concise (please no more than two pages 😭)
If you’re wanting a CV with a creative design, Canva is a great place to start: check out templates
Keep it clear: Name, location, number, email, social profiles & github
PRO TIP: make sure your email, socials and github are linked!
Some swear against personal profiles, we personally love to read a profile (as long as they’re short!.)
Make sure you use the title Software Developer in the first sentence and try to avoid generic terms like ‘highly motivated’ 🥱
A chance to show off your technical and soft skills.
Make sure it’s easy to read and keep it relevant (even altering them for each role..)
If you’re a bootcamper, start with that. A few bullet points of your course and then examples with links to three of your BEST projects.
Follow this with your career experience, again use bullet points and try to keep this relevant and concise. You want your technical experience to take up the bulk of your CV.
Just getting this out the way- NO GCSE’s. A Hiring Manager doesn’t need this information. Add relevant technical training and any courses that would add value to a technical team.
Interests and additional information
What do you like doing? What makes you, you? Do you speak any languages? Do you drive? Use bullet points to give an insight into what makes you tick.
A Developer needs to have a keen eye for detail so make sure to get your CV checked at least once before sending!
You have SO much to add to a business and creating a CV that represents this is really important. A Hiring Manager wants to get a good understanding of who you are- so be confident in your writing and personal.
Why are you career changing?
What makes you unique?
What value can you add to their team?
